Improved Water Access: Bamba - Shirango Water Supply Project in Kilifi County commissioned

On the 3rd of April 2023, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Alice Wahome, commissioned the Bamba - Shirango Water Supply Project in Kilifi County. The project, which covers an area of approximately 73 km2, is set to provide clean and safe drinking water to the local community, as well as improve access to water for various institutions in the area.

The Bamba - Shirango Water Supply Project is a crucial development for the local community, as it eliminates the need for residents to travel long distances in search of water. Before the project was implemented, the community had to rely on water sources in neighboring Kwale County, where they purchased water at Ksh 10 per 20-liter jerrycan. This situation was not only time-consuming but also expensive for many residents who are low-income earners.

During the commissioning, the CS was accompanied by various leaders, including the Governor of Kilifi County, H.E Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, Mr. Bill Lay - Chairman of Board of Trustees, Water Sector Trust Fund, Mr. Willis Ombai, Chief Executive Officer - Water Sector Trust Fund, and Hon. Tungule Kazungu - Mp Ganze, among others. The leaders praised the completion of the project, which they described as a significant milestone in addressing the water shortage in the area.

The Bamba - Shirango Water Supply Project comprises a pipeline that passes through a gently steady rising slope from Bamba to Rimarapera and Midoina. The project also includes connections to various institutions, including Rimarapera Dispensary, Midoina Dispensary, Shirango Dispensary, Rimarapera Primary School, Mitangani Secondary School, Midoina Primary School, Midoina Secondary School, Dhalado ECDE & Pry1 School, Jira Primary School, Gede ECDE School, Ng’ambo ECDE School, and Chamamba ECDE School.

The provision of water to these institutions is expected to have a significant impact on the local community, particularly in improving access to education and healthcare. With clean and safe water readily available, the institutions can provide better services to the community, leading to improved health outcomes and better academic performance for students.

The completion of the Bamba - Shirango Water Supply Project is a clear demonstration of the government's commitment to providing basic services to all citizens, regardless of their location or social status. The project will undoubtedly improve the quality of life for the local community, and we hope to see more of such projects in the future.
